Elf on a Shelf has become a popular tradition for many families in the month of December. If you’re just getting started, this arrival letter poem will help out!
The First Arrival
Who has an Elf on a Shelf?
My kids have grown quite fond of our elf, Buddy, and I kinda don’t mind (now that we have a ton of elf ideas to do each day). They know that their elf is keeping an eye on them and is reporting back to Santa each night.
We are always reminding them that Buddy is watching and knows if they are being naughty or nice. Seems to work because they usually start behaving when we remind them of this each day.
Since you can’t copy the Real Elf on the Shelf story, my cousin’s hubby decided to write an Elf on the Shelf Arrival Letter POEM that tells the Elf on the Shelf story. It was so cute that I decided to make a printable of it for others to use as well.
It’s great for when you first introduce the Elf to your family or as a reminder when he comes each year.

I LOVE the Elf poem! I had never heard of him until this year, too. But the doll is a little creepy. 🙂 I need to find a normal looking elf and then I can use this poem. lol Thanks a lot!
Forgive me but there’s a typo: “Then each night to the NoRth Pole via the airport.” (i.e., the R is missing). It’s no big deal to me (I have to re-type anyway because of the Australian spelling of a few words), but I thought you might like to know.
Thanks so much for the inspiration. I’m going to use the poem as a starting off point for mine.
Cheers,
Cate
I am going to use the poem this year – thank you!!
YEAH!!! I have been putting off buy the book and now I”m glad!!! I guess we’ll have to get busy making an elf. 🙂
Thank you for this!! I am a stay at home mom and the real elf on the shelf is a little out of our budget but I love the idea! I already have a cute little elf that I want to use for this I was just looking for a great story or poem to explain what it is all about!
Thank you so much for this cute poem. Today was my first day ever having the Elf on The Shelf visit our home and my son really liked the story except for the part he couldn’t touch the Elf LOL!! Merry Christmas!

I love this poem!!! I can’t afford to buy the original elf on the shelf but found a really cute one at a craft store. This poem is just too cute and much better than the original version in my eyes! Thank you soo much for sharing it!
Thanks so much for this poem! It is perfect!
This is great!!!. I was a little reluctant to purchase the original Elf on the Shelf. I wasnt sure if my two year old would grasp the concept…I know kids are a lot smarter then we think ..lol SO I Found an adorable elf at The Dollar Tree, yup for only 1$. I hide the elf, printed the poem out and pretended Santa had just sent an email. After we had read the poem we went hunting for the elf…she was so excited when we found him. Thank you again!
Thank you! I bought a less creepy elf at Costco, but now found out you can’t buy just the book anywhere! This is perfect!
SO glad you can use it! 😀
I love your poem with border. The R in North was left out. Can you please fix it so I can print it?
Thanks
WOW!! Can’t believe it wasn’t caught until now. Just fixed it. Thx for the heads up! 🙂
There is a DVD you can get that explains the story
It’s called ‘An Elfs Story’ from Argos, Amazon, eBay it’s currently £2.99 with free delivery from Argos
Thanks for sharing! I’ve really been struggling with the whole “elf” idea. Everyone has theirs doing things naughty, I really don’t like that at all. I think too often we take the “real” meaning of Christmas out and feel it with things that aren’t at all what Christmas is about. Our elf will be teaching our kids about the real meaning of Christmas and reporting back to Santa about their behavior while also bringing messages of Christ back to the kids. The whole idea is really warming up to me now. I dig the poem!!!
I agree, and I think messages of Christ is GREAT!! 😀
The dollar store has cute nice size elves for $1.00 this year.
Good to know – thanks for the tip!

Thank you, for your ELK on the SHELF. All of my Grandkids have one.
Your style is unique compared to other folks I have read stuff from.
I appreciate you for posting when you have
the opportunity, Guess I’ll just book mark this blog.
I do consider all of the concepts you’ve offered for your post.
They’re really convincing and can definitely work.
Still, the posts are too quick for novices. Could you please prolong
them a little from next time? Thank you for the post.
