I have such a sweet and simple t-shirt dress refashion for you today!
When my kids were little I was always looking for cute ways to give t-shirts new life. They were always ending up with little spots or holes in them and little dresses like these were the perfect way to refashion them. They are so easy and quick to make – and they are a great beginner sewing project as well!
This little dress went together in just over 15 minutes. So you could easily do a little refashion, or even start with a new top and make up a pretty dress as a gift to show off a favorite fabric, like this darling little pennant fabric.
Here is what you need to make your own:
- T-shirt
- Fabric for skirt – depends upon size of top and height of child
- Thread, Scissors, Sewing Machine
Start off with a simple t-shirt. You can use a plain top you want to refashion, a new one like this cute lace embellished version – or you can add your own embellishment. A little embroidery or ribbon on the sleeves would be a great addition.
Cut off the top 1″ below the bottom edge of the sleeve, all the way across.
Cut your fabric for the skirt. I used one panel of fabric 19″ long by 44″ wide for a 5T top. You want about 1 ½ the width of your top for the width of the fabric. To determine the length, measure the total length you’d like the dress and add 2″. Subtract the length of the top from the shoulder to the cut edge – this will give you the length of fabric you’ll need to cut.
Sew your side seams together with a ½″ seam allowance. Zig zag the edges of the seams so they don’t fray.
Sew a gathering stitch around the top edge of the skirt and pull up the threads so they are the same width as the top.
Turn the skirt wrong side out. Place the top right side out inside the skirt, so the right sides are touching and the cut edge of the top lines up with the gathered edge of the skirt. Sew together with a ½″ seam allowance. Zig zag this seam as well.
Turn right side out and press lightly.
Hem the bottom edge of the skirt by turning up the bottom edge twice and sewing in place.
Press the hem and skirt and you’re all finished!
I hope you give it a try, it’s a fun and easy refashion to do!

Hello just wanted to give you a brief heads up
and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading properly.
I’m not sure why but I think its a linkinbg issue.
I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and
both show thhe same results.
Thanks for letting me know. I’m not having issues with mine, so I wonder what could be causing that? Anyone else having problems?
