I’m slightly obsessed with Vintage pieces. If you come to my home, you’d see them scattered about the house. I have vintage windows, jars, books – you name it!!
It wasn’t too long ago that I was a little Antique Shop in Alvin Texas and saw a Turquoise door that I fell in love with. I wasn’t sure exactly what I’d do with it, but I knew I need it in my life (yes, I’m a little dramatic). 😉 I tried to explain to the hubby that I had already bought it and we needed to go back there to pick it up. Being the loving husband that he is, he said he would go get it. He brought it home and asked me, “where in the world is this going??” I had told him I thought it would be PERFECT for our laundry room door, which is connected to our kitchen. He agreed it would be a great addition and started measuring. It was ½ inch too big. UGHHH! He told me he could make it work if I really wanted it there, but that it would be tough, especially because the door was SO heavy. I decided I would figure out something else for it.
Fast forward a week, and I’m in our garage and see this old bench we brought with us from Arizona. It was red, and I had taken red out of our color theme for our old house, and then it all “clicked!!” I would take off the back part of the old bench, paint it white, and attach it to the door which would be a perfect spot for us to sit white taking our shoes on and off by our front door! Genius!!! Again, the hubby needed a little convincing but we thought we’d give it a try.
I’m in love!! It’s a one-of-a-king Vintage Door Bench that is just the perfect “pop of color” I was hoping to add! Although I’m still sad it didn’t work for the laundry room door, I’m still keeping my eye out for another vintage door for that. In the meantime, I’m enjoying this fun bench that is perfect to sit on anytime (but especially when taking our shoes on and off!)
You can easily do this with any bench and door, but this is what we had to do for ours to make it work…
SUPPLIES:
- Door
- Bench (with back taken off)
- Lag Screws
- Screws
- Paint
- Router
DIRECTIONS:
1. We began with the door…. It was really heavy, and because of that we didn’t want it too top heavy which could cause it to fall over. This was a good excuse to buy a hand router, and with that we routed out chunks from the backside of the door (no one would see that side anyway) to make it lighter.
2. Next, we sawed off the back door handle so it would lay flat up against the wall.
{The bench beforehand}
{Attached in 3 places}
3. From there, we took the backside off of the bench and reinforced it with nails and glue (it was a little old). We painted it white (as well as added a few layers of spray polyurethane) to match our door and new home decor and attached it to the vintage door.
To do that we added a slat of wood to the back side of the bench and screwed that in (we also painted that white). From there we attached it to the door by screwing from the backside with 3 inch lag screws (you will use however long to go through the door and into the slat of wood on your bench AND the bench).
We made sure we attached the bench in several places to reinforce and to make sure it didn’t wobble at one spot.
4. From there we attached these hooks and small YOURS and MINE plates from a piece I found at Home Goods.
It’s perfect for the kiddos to hang their backpacks on!!
5. To tie in more of my home decor colors I made an easy ribbon garland to attach to it.
EASY!
Add some coordinating throw pillows, and you have a super awesome new piece in your home!!!
Um, yes, I LOVE it!! It’s a mod podge furniture piece that fits right into our home and matches all our home decor!
I couldn’t be more happy with how it turned out and love that it sets right next to our entry way. 🙂
It may have taken the hubby a bit to realize he’d like it too, but I think he’s finally accepted it as the newest member of our home decor. 😉

Oh my gosh!! I love this so much! You guys did an amazing job! On another note, do you mind telling me your paint color on the wall behind your bench? We are building a house and we picked gray as our paint color. The swatch looked perfectly gray but once they got it in the house it leans a little bit too blue for my liking. Your gray looks pure gray and I love it. We are going to wait until we get all of our stuff in the house and it’s completely finished to decide, but we are thinking that we might have to repaint it:(
Thank you!!! We LOVEEE the gray we used. I know sometimes it can be a little blue-ish or purplish, but this is one is perfect gray. It’s Sherwin Williams – Mindful Gray (7016). 🙂
Love it! Was going to ask you what color but you bought it already yhat color is that correct?
Love this! What color did you paint the door?
LOVE this idea and all the colors!! WAYYYY too cute!
Gorgeous!! I’m completely inspired!
Thanks for stopping by, Ashley. SO glad you like it. 😉
