Such a cute gift right? I love gifts that you can use more than one way.

The embroidery is perfect for a beginner, but if you didn’t want to do that, a colorful fabric would look great too. The jar is big enough to hold some thread, a measuring tape, little scissors and more. You can even dress it up with measuring tape ribbon!

Easy Embroidered Mason Jar Pincushion Materials:

  • 1 pint mason jar with ring and lid (though you can use a quart size jar too if you’d like)
  • 2 pieces of fabric – about 12″ x 12″ each
  • 1 piece of fusible fleece – 10″ x 4 ½″
  • 3″ circle of felt
  • small piece of ribbon to wrap around jar lid
  • DMC pearl cotton  – black and blue
  • stuffing
  • hot glue
  • 25″ ribbon
  • various items to put in jar
  • Eat. Sleep. Sew. embroidery pattern

Begin by cutting a circle of fabric about 1 ½″ larger than your mason jar lid.

Run a gathering stitch around the edge of the fabric. Pull up the threads and fill the area with stuffing. You don’t need much – if you overfill the fabric the lid won’t screw back on.

Place the lid inside the fabric and tighten the threads. Don’t let any of the batting overlap the edges.

Pop the pincushion top inside the jar ring and push it all the way against the top of the ring. Cut a smaller circle of felt and glue in place on the inside of the lid.

Glue the ribbon around the outside of the lid ring to add a little bit of color. That finishes the top part of the pincushion!

To make the sleeve, transfer the embroidery pattern to the middle of your top fabric. Stitch the letters with a back stitch and fill in the larger portions of the word “Sew” with a diagonal satin stitch. Embroider the flowers with a lazy daisy stitch. (You can find embroidery tutorials here.)

With the design centered on the fabric, cut the piece into a rectangle 4 ½″ x 10″. Cut your back fabric to the same size.

Iron the fusible fleece to the wrong side of the top fabric. Cut your ribbon in half and sew it in the center of each short side with a ¼″ seam allowance.

Lay the back fabric face down on the top piece and pin in place. Sew around all four sides with a ½″ seam allowance, leaving an opening in the bottom side of about 3″ for turning. Make sure you don’t catch the ribbons as you sew. Clip the corners at an angle.

Turn the piece right side out and press. Sew around all four sides, just inside the edge to top stitch the sleeve and sew the opening closed.
